A man called horse by Elliot Silverstein with Richard Harris is a story of an English aristocrat named John Morgan, who was taken prisoner by a tribe of Sioux while he was chasing the game with his associates. At first, the Indians considered him like an animal and abused him. Indeed, they call him “horse” because Morgan wears their belongings and he is tied to a pole like an animal.
Otherwise, the tribe’s chief, called “Yellow Hand”, offers John Morgan to his mother because he is useful and helps her in her daily routine. John Morgan becomes a slave to the den mother of the Sioux camp. Some time later, he makes friends with Batise, a Native Americans’ captive for five years who initiates John to the rites and practices of the Sioux and especially teaches him their language.
Thanks to many acts of bravery towards the tribe, Morgan is accepted within the Sioux because he has a new Indian name: “Horse” for his courage and he weds with the chief’s sister. So John Morgan becomes an uncontested member among the Sioux.
That is why we will show how the vision of Native Americans differs in this film and that there is a real desire to portray reality as it is.
